Royal Commission into Aged Care Industry Commences

In 2018, shocking details emerged of mistreatment at Oakden Older Persons Mental Health Facility in Adelaide. Investigations return to South Australia today as the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety commences. With Australia’s attention being drawn once again to our ageing population, many families will revisit the conversation surrounding aged care.

To better understand the public’s perceptions of Aged Care providers, we conducted a nationwide study of Australians in 2018. This research revealed that for many, thinking about aged care can be an emotional roller coaster. Confusion and lack of transparency in the industry are significant factors that deter older people from discussing aged care options with their family members. With the media presenting a negative image of the industry, it comes as no surprise that ageing in home is the most preferred option.

We agree that the industry needs to be standardized to provide quality care to all ageing individuals. However, the negative portrayal in the media, does not tell the whole story.
